Background of the Study
Language contact in multilingual urban centers significantly influences phonetic features by facilitating the exchange of linguistic elements among diverse communities. In Nigeria, urban centers such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt exhibit high levels of language contact, where speakers of indigenous languages, Nigerian English, and other tongues interact daily (Adebayo, 2023). This study investigates how such contact influences phonetic characteristics including pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm. The interaction of multiple languages often leads to phonetic convergence or divergence, resulting in unique sound patterns that reflect a dynamic linguistic landscape. By comparing phonetic features across different urban centers, the research aims to identify common trends and distinctive variations attributable to language contact. Audio analysis and comparative phonetic methods will document how contact-induced changes manifest in everyday speech. The findings are expected to shed light on the adaptive nature of Nigerian phonetics in multilingual environments and to inform language policy and educational practices aimed at preserving linguistic diversity (Adebayo, 2023; Okafor, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized influence of language contact on phonetics, there is limited comparative research on how multilingual interactions shape Nigerian phonetic features in urban centers. Existing studies often address individual languages in isolation, neglecting the complex dynamics that arise from language contact. This gap restricts our understanding of the phonetic consequences of multilingualism in urban settings, where diverse linguistic influences converge. Miscommunications may arise if contact-induced phonetic variations are not properly understood and accommodated. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically comparing phonetic patterns in Nigerian urban centers, revealing the impact of language contact on pronunciation and intonation (Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze phonetic features influenced by language contact in Nigerian urban centers.
To compare phonetic variations across multiple urban settings.
To assess the impact of multilingual interactions on phonetic convergence and divergence.
Research Questions
How does language contact influence phonetic features in Nigerian urban centers?
What phonetic variations emerge from multilingual interactions?
How do these variations affect communication in urban settings?
Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the impact of language contact on Nigerian phonetics in multilingual urban centers. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and policymakers by informing strategies to accommodate phonetic diversity in communication and language education, ensuring effective interaction in multicultural environments (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to comparing phonetic features in selected Nigerian multilingual urban centers and does not cover rural areas.
